Ringing In The New Year

This year, Emme got baptized on New Year's Eve afternoon. It was just lovely, as was she. Gemma's loves and looks up to her cousins so we are ever grateful for their wonderful examples.

Since we were gathered with the Lusk's for the festivities of the day, we celebrated long into the night with games and food. Between Christmas and New Year's my pregnancy weight gain was definitely put into acceleration!

Because Josh and I are getting old and Gemma fell asleep at around 10:30 from all the excitement and fun of the day, we rang in the New Year mid-Sardine Canyon on our way back to our what Gemma endearingly refers to as our "Logan House."

We are thankful for all the experience that 2011 gave us and happy to ring in another beautiful year together as our little family.

Christmas Recap

Gemma was all about Christmas this year. I am kind of sad it is all over for the obvious reasons, and then because I can no longer use, "Santa's Elves Are Watching," as my trump card discipline tactic.

She got the whole thing, which made it that much more magical for Josh and I.

Her main present this year was a kitchen set, that Josh and I stayed up until 4 am Christmas Eve assembling... It was our first official year in Santa's workshop and one full of laughter and loopiness (Which I am pretty sure isn't a word, but you get the picture). Next year, I will remember to bring Martinelli's and Cheetos.

As it turns out the $14 cardboard playhouse ("doghouse" in Gemma's world) sitting next to the kitchen was an instant hit, with the kitchen receiving its due notice sometime later.

Note to self with future almost-three-year-old's: don't overthink it.

A Sunday Christmas is always special,
especially when followed by a Sunday afternoon nap and ridiculous amounts of amazing food.

All said, we had a wonderful Christmas full of family, love, and good old-fashioned cheer.

Reunion

Remember December 1st this year? It was the day when hurricane force winds swept through Salt Lake areas. The winds tore up trees and tipped over semi-trucks. Sadly, Josh and I had no clue what was going on. Logan is pretty sheltered from this kind of gale. However, we happened to be driving to the airport that day and witnessed the wreckage.

On a happier note, we were headed to the airport because my younger brother Josh returned home from his mission. This made it a pretty wonderful day for us. Josh is kind of precious and though we know he was such a great missionary, we are so happy to have him home. Gemma was only 10 months old when Josh left, so needless to say, he was a little shocked at all the changes.

Giving Thanks

The month of November has been my favorite month of 2011. As this year draws to a close, it feels like so much has happened, and often at such a frenetic pace,
that I hardly had time to process it, let alone enjoy it, or stop and be thankful for it.

There was something quiet and magical about November. We celebrated a series of slow Saturday mornings with breakfast dates. These brunches left me feeling renewed
and so very thankful for the love present in my home because of these two:

In November, these unscheduled Saturday's sometimes left a moment for guilty pleasure and glorious calm:

The month of November yielded a weekend getaway with my love to Las Vegas, where I rediscovered sleeping in, and uninterrupted conversations. I am so thankful for Josh and all the ways he makes me whole. I am also thankful for long walks, delicious dinners and good shopping.

I think I might also be thankful for Wolfgang Puck and Thanksgiving Creme Brûlée.

And of course, the month of November culminated in official holiday cheer. I am thankful for a beautiful Thanksgiving celebration, with a wonderful family.

...and the chance to flex my pie making muscles.

But most of all, I am thankful for the the opportunity to be a mother to this beautifully,

vibrant and intelligent little girl, whose precious face makes me believe in all that is good,

and who never ceases to help me understand just how much I have to be thankful for.

Chyna was the star of Odyssey's Thriller Tour this year.

She did such an amazing job, and if you didn't see her, you definitely missed a great show.

We are so proud of our beautiful, albeit, slightly macabre dancer Chyna Lee.

I think she died in nearly every number.

We watched her perform in the sold out Logan show this year.

Ashley's Birthday

We went down to South Jordan for Miss Ashley's 6th birthday at the end of Conference weekend.

Free dinner and fun parties are just a few of the many perks of living close to our wonderful families!

It was fun to share in the special day. I can't believe how big my nieces and nephews are getting.

It might be making me feel a little old. Thank goodness Gemma (who loved all Mel's fun activities) keeps us young and silly...

Fall and Football

Brooke's Baptism

Josh's youngest cousin Brooke Hadlock was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in September. We were lucky that we could take a quick trip down to be with her on that special day. It was the first baptism that Gemma has seen and she was fascinated by the process. We are so thankful for the good examples of family.

While Josh was in Oregon, Gemma and I went up to Rexburg to be with family. My dad's brother, sisters, and families got together at my parent's house for a little reunion.

It ended up being quite the gathering with more than 20 kids under the age of 10, and most of them right around the age of two! There was good food and lots of activities to keep us all busy. Most of all, it was great to see the family that we grew up with, but don't see as often as we would like to anymore.

hardly had the time to look at me for a picture.
Too much to do, and so many cousins to play with.

The little girls searched the garden for lady bugs and had quite a collection.

Grandma Munns recounted a story about a similar get-together about 20 years ago,
where I had excitedly brought a lady bug inside to show to everyone.
I held it out to show my Great-Grandpa Jernberg,
who must have thought that I was offering him a red hot,
because he popped it right in his mouth!

As told by the final series of events captured for the day,
I am officially the annoying mom with a camera.

She just wanted to eat her pudding in peace.

Today Josh and I celebrate five years of marriage. We observed the milestone with a little weekend escape to Seattle, where we explored Pike's Market, shopped, ate, went to the aquarium, caught a Mariner's game and took a lovely ferry ride. We are apart this week due to work, and I miss my love. It is safe to say that he is my everything, and I am forever glad that I get to travel life by his side.

to teach a child how to eat an Oreo correctly. It must be instinct.

Beginners Luck

While in Sandpoint, I tried wake-boarding for the first time. I was able to get up after a few tries and had a great time (although I found some muscles I didn't remember I had the next day).
Gemma kept a close watch on me, and was rather distraught the whole time I was out on the lake.
I couldn't convince her that I was having fun. She just wanted me to get back on the "ship."

And when I eventually crashed, she kept telling everyone that they needed to get the "string" to mommy.

Josh's dad is from Preston, Idaho, so Josh grew up going to,

"That Famous Preston Night Rodeo."

Since Gemma had never been (the last time we went, she was a babe in womb),

we definitely had to go!

Gemma loved the parade, including running out to grab candy with Poppy and Grammy.

She was pretty enthralled with her spoils- candy and chocolate milk.

Gemma wanted to try mutton busting and was so funny about the "mean" bulls. The rodeo had some of the best bull-riding we have ever witnessed, and all-in-all is a western favorite that never disappoints (especially considering I have a secret crush on colored wranglers and cowboys).

We ended the night with a farris-wheel ride.

Gemma looks slightly terrified, but did actually warm up to the idea in the end.

Friends Since Birth

Today I picked Gemma up from Peter's house. She has so much fun with Peter, that I am hardly able to peel her away, and certainly not without a fight. Along with Gemma this week, Aubrey handed me a disk of pictures that she has taken of these two babes, literally since birth. It felt like Christmas.

Thank you, thank you Aubrey (without a doubt, one of the most thoughtful people I know)!

In my review of the pictures, I came across these:

I teasingly asked Gemma if she liked to kiss Peter, to which she said, "Yeah, but sometimes he covers his face."

It only confirms what I had already guessed: Josh officially has his hands full.

I do declare, they make a pretty cute couple.

Aubrey and I will have to discuss match-making in about 20 years :)

Seeing Clearly

My husband once described me as a blob with two dark spots where my eyes should be.
Keep in mind that this was in response to the question,
"What do I look like when you are not wearing your glasses or have contacts in?"

Josh has had glasses since the second grade, and worn contacts since the fifth grade.

Although I think he is pretty darn cute in glasses, both then and now,

and glasses are even in vogue right now (silly trends), it doesn't change the fact that
good vision is preferable.

So, I am excited to say that he will be going under the laser this Thursday morning for corrective eye surgery. Here's to 20/20 vision! Wish us luck!

This weekend Gem and I jumped in the car and drove to Rexburg for an impromptu girly retreat. Friday was my mom's birthday. It was fun to be able to spend time with her and my sister Maja. We enjoyed red velvet cupcakes, diet coke and talking late into the night.

Saturday Gemma got in some quality cousin time. She has so many beautiful and talented girl cousins and aunties to look up to, making her one very LUCKY girl.

We can't go without mentioning her best buddy Owen or "Owie" as she endearingly calls him.
These two will share a graduating class in 2027. Bless his heart for putting up with Gemma's bossiness and for hanging out with seven girls all day.

There was a little sandy "beach" around our pool in Reno.

Gemma didn't like the sand at first and would ask me to hold her rather than walk through the grit.

Our beach neighbors brought some fun toys, and were kind enough to let Gemma use them, which made all the difference. As you can see, she quickly warmed up to the idea.

The Biggest Little City

Josh had to go on a work trip through Northern Nevada. Gemma and I miss daddy when he is gone and decided we would tag along this time.

We got some summer pool time and shopping in...

...and need I say it? Also ate good food!

The food highlights went as follows:

The Star Hotel in Elko, NV. Recommendation courtesy of Bill Henderson, and one much appreciated by my husband.

Grimaldi's Pizza in Sparks, NV. We ate the original waaay back in the Summer of 2007, and can't help but grab a slice (or five) anywhere it is offered.

It's that good.

Plus they give your child a piece of dough to play with that keeps them totally occupied for the duration of your meal. Miracle workers.

We tried the local favorite, "Peg's Glorified Ham N Eggs." It is rated No. 13 on Esquire's "Best Breakfast in America." The author of the list said, "You should get on a plane and go to Reno just to eat there." Amen.

Honorable mention goes to Capriotti's Sandwiches. I will definitely be a return customer. I had the Chicken Cheesesteak with mushrooms and onions, and since I am kind of obsessed with mushrooms, it really hit the spot. They have these all over Nevada and of course in St. George. That town gets everything first in Utah.

We also took a beautifully scenic drive around Tahoe. I loved every moment of it.

This picture is classic. A perfect stranger is telling Josh his life story and Gemma has found a random dog to love.

On they way there and back, Josh and I read aloud the Agatha Christie mystery, "And Then There Were None." It was lovely, riveting and the perfect way to dull out the Nevada desert drive and enjoy one another's company. Gemma was also a super trooper on all this road tripping, making it another successful Josh Smith Family Vacation for the books.

In case you wondered....

We had a GREAT 4th of July weekend, complete with lots of relaxation and fireworks.

(Full Summary Below)

Day One:

We drove up to Driggs, IDAHO on Friday night and got to stay at this lovely destination:

I woke up Saturday morning to the sound of plane engines overhead and asked Josh, "Is there an air show this morning?" to which he replied, "Either that or we are getting bombed by the Japanese." Leave it to Josh for the quick comeback for my captain obvious question. No shortage of wit at our house.

We took full advantage of the beautifully crisp morning by throwing pop-its.

Chyna and friends made a delicious breakfast which changed my opinion on French toast by 180 degrees (I have never been a fan). Apparently if you make it with real French bread and slather it in coconut maple syrup (that tastes more like you melted caramels on toast than poured syrup atop), it is stupendously delicious.

We spent the afternoon at a mini fair at Huntsman Springs, where Gemma loved her life more every second, as the day included jump houses AND dog shows.

The adults in the party found a few things to help pass the time:

After naps and relaxation, and maybe a round of golf, we took a cruise on a tandem bike, listened to Glenn Beck, and had a pretty great fireworks show.

Don't worry, Josh knows all the lyrics to the song, "Bicycle Built For Two," which greatly enhanced the tandem experience.

My husband was riveted by Glenn Beck as evidenced by his high score on Angry Birds.

This was Gemma's first fireworks show. Needless to say, she loved it.

Day Two:

On Sunday, we woke up and went to church. Elder Ballard was there and gave his testimony during sacrament meeting. It was pretty cool to hear the testimony of an apostle in such an intimate setting. After church, some went on a Sunday drive, and others napped and relaxed.

Relaxation included hanging out in the sun, and eating highly nutritious snacks.

Gemma loved her mini pool, and although she always started out in a swim suit, seemed to find herself with less and less clothing as the day wore on.

We had a pretty fun time on the slip n' slide throughout the weekend.

Gemma got lots of quality grandma time.

Kim and Dana prepared an delicious brisket meal. Amazing. Enough Said.

My obsession for Instagraming deepened and we all formed a new "planking" obsession, that lasted the whole night in the form of gut laughing over a "plank war" with the Harries cousins on the Instagram feed.

Planking while driving might not be the best choice, but it sure was funny... you probably had to be there.

Of course the boys loved their home-made fireworks show.

Day Three:

On the 4th of July, we drove over to Jackson Hole for lunch and fun. It was Grandma Dana's birthday and she took Gemma on a carriage ride around the square. Gemma poked her head out the window and just kept saying to all passers-by, "Hey look everybody, I'm riding on the horsey." It definitely made her day, if not her life.

Of course there was a wee bit of shopping, and possibly more posing with oversized sunglasses.

Josh and I were in charge of dinner Monday night. We had an "All-American meal" with, Coney Dogs, Chicago Dogs, and In n' Out sliders, topped off by birthday cupcakes.

After all the fun, we packed our bags and started the trip back to Logan. We hit Idaho Falls just in time for their fireworks and couldn't help but pull over to watch the amazing show.

What a weekend of fun!

The Diggs On Driggs

We got our itinerary for the 4th of July weekend in Driggs, Idaho, courtesy of Whitney Jo. In true fashion, no detail went un-noticed. The weekend will be complete with meals and activities, and we are so looking forward to it!

We did happen to notice that most meal assignments were prefaced with "So and so's 'famous,' (insert meal here)." Josh and I were given the 4th of July meal with the assignment, "Traditional BBQ."

If you didn't know yet, food in our world is a BIG deal. Though we understand that we aren't famous for making anything yet, and Whitney has been receiving a lot of justly deserved accolades as of late for her fab food making, we would like to make it clear we aren't ready to give up the title of "Top Chef"all that easily.

Josh has been busy working on secret family recipes for the weekend.

This is serious people.

We are not above child labor if it means a decisive win.

At church we reviewed this talk given by President Monson in the last General Conference. In the course of the address the question was asked, "Why are so many willing to give so much in order to receive the blessings of the temple?"

I was thankful for this question, as it allowed me the opportunity to review why I cherish my temple covenants. Tonight I am thankful for my little family, and the blessing that it is to be sealed to them.

Dancing Class

Gemma has been in Pocatello this week doing a dance intensive with her auntie and grandma. In case you were wondering, we start young around here. Gemma is loving life and thinks she is pretty official with her tap shoes, her ballet shoes, and her little dance bag (Thanks Grammy!). I miss her cute face around these parts and can't wait to get her back tomorrow, but am so glad she has had a great time and is learning from the best!

Father's Day

We spent the weekend working at the restaurant and were able to have dinner with my dad at Sumisu on Saturday night. Sunday we went to church and had a wonderful dinner with the Smith side of the family. The spread never disappoints. Dana made ribs, mashed potatoes and beans. Whitney and I were in charge of the salads. As the newbies to the family cooking, I have to admit we did pretty good.

Josh happily spent the afternoon watching the U.S. Open with his dad.

Gemma is always in heaven with a crowd and had a blast with Dustin's niece, who was visiting.

In summation, Gemma and I love our daddy. He is the best thing in our world. Josh fills our home with laughter and a deep and abiding love for life, which being a parent has only intensified.

Three Hallmark moments I don't ever want to forget from the weekend:

We woke up early Saturday morning and Gemma climbed into bed with us and sang, "I love daddy yessiree, I love mommy yessiree, we are a happy family!"
On Father's Day Gemma excitedly told her daddy in great detail, everything that he would be given for Father's Day hours before we were going to give the gift (being bad at secrets is a family trait).
When she actually gave him his gift, complete with her little-armed hug she unprompted said, "Happy Fodders Day Daddy! I love you," in her cutest baby voice. Melted my heart.

Summerfest 2011

Logan is a pretty great little place to live and the reasons are many. One of the community events that we like to go to each year is Summerfest. Admittedly, we attend more for the food than we do the nicknacks (with the exception of the Winborg Sister's Booth for me). We always end up running into friends and family there, and this year was no exception. Food, friends, family- makes for a good night in the Smith household.

My Little Yogi

Here at the Smith Residence we have been trying to make some moves toward a healthier lifestyle (minus aforementioned "breakfast of champions"). Perhaps it is because we have reached the age where brownies for breakfast or a bag of Cheetos in a single sitting are no longer acceptable unless you are prepared for an undesirable outcome. Or maybe we have been at that age for a while, but were resisting the truth...

In any case, we are not crash coursing it, but trying to make better decisions that we can maintain.

This means that our grocery cart may have contained brown rice and hummus this week.

It also means that I have scheduled two of my favorite workouts (running and yoga) in the hopes that I will be able to the maintain motivation to stick with a regular routine.

Thank goodness I have wonderful friends to workout with and a husband that is helping make better decisions for the whole family. Gemma is even climbing on board! Hey, they say the family that namaste's together stays together. :)

Gemma just woke up from a nap and she and I had the funniest little talk. She is usually quite the conversationalist, but I was particularly impressed with the first sentence out of her mouth, as it was complete with conjunction.

Gemma: "Momma, I have one earen (earring), but the other one is all gone!"

Me: "Oh no! Did it fall off?"

Gemma: "Yeah, it did."

Me: laughing "Let's go tell daddy."

Gemma: "Momma, I want a baba juice."

Me: "Go give daddy a kiss and I bet he will get one for you."

Josh pours apple juice in her sippy, while I crack open the Diet Coke.

Gemma: "Momma, that's Diet Coke. That your baba juice?"

She knows me all too well... especially considering this was my tweet this morning.

(P.S. We are obviously slightly bummed at the outcome of SYTYCD, but it was a great opportunity. At 19-years-old Chyna did an amazing job, and has a lot ahead of her. Next year maybe?!)

Channeling Martha

I have a list of sewing projects that I have wanted to do and never make the time for. Last week Josh made fun of me. He said, "You always say 'I can just make it,' but I'm not even sure you can sew."

Yesterday I pulled out my sewing machine for the first time in a long time.

That boy and his reverse psychology gets me every time. My inner, "I'll show you!" came out and I whipped up this little darling in a just over an hour (thanks to this tutorial). Felt good to get back at it, and also to not spend $50 on a throw pillow.

Next up is a ruffled pillow. Dreamy and feminine. I will let you know how it goes.

Hope everyone had a good Mother's Day Weekend! I know I did!

1. I got to spend time with my lovely mothers and sisters. I am so lucky to have these amazing women in my life, and so grateful for them and all they have done to shape who I am as a person/wife/mother.

2. Josh took me to Salt Lake for some shopping, wherein I was beyond spoiled.

3. I got my first hand-made present from Miss Gemma. I love my chocolate bar covered in scribble art and am looking forward to many more years of these tender, homemade prizes.

4. We got to talk with our missionaries. How we love them! They are both doing well and it was so great to hear from them. This was Elder Munns' last call. I can't believe he will be home before Christmas.

5. Oh, and we ate great food. I think that is always part of a good weekend, don't you?

Kangaroo's Can Hop Hop

I teach violin lessons to one little student a week. While I did this during high school and college as a job, it is a lot more of a hobby now. I am happy for a little time each week to keep my fingers in it and for Gemma to be around the music.

I grew up going to my own brother Nick's violin lessons and I think everything came easier to me in the learning process because of the early exposure. We are waiting on a little longer attention span before we start full blown violin lessons, but for now have fun now playing rhythm games with the Suzuki variations. She also likes to help me play "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." (Pictured Above).

A Childhood Favorite

We try to get outside whenever there has been a semi-decent day this Spring (sadly rare). Both Josh and I have fondest memories of feeding the ducks as kids, and are doing our parental duty of passing on the tradition. This is officially one of our favorite ways to take a break from our house and expend the energy of a very busy little two-year-old.

We have been in Idaho most weekends working at our family's restaurant.

This last weekend I was especially happy to be close to home so I could drive a little further

to Rexburg for a baby shower. Megan looked darling and hardly even pregnant at seven months along.

Jessica and her mom Cindy were the best hostesses.

The food was amazing looking and tasting!

It was so wonderful to see my beautiful friends from High School.

I count it among my many blessings to have grown up with these girls.

And I love seeing the newest additions to the next generation.

Gemma and I have been waging a two year old vs. mommy battle, where she un-does anything I clean up at twice the rate. Most of the time it is completely frustrating. Picture me screaming into my pillow, and stomping my foot much like a two year old.

But perspective is a beautiful thing and my Heavenly Father knows I need it in healthy doses.

Today as I was cleaning up one of the 5,000 stuffed animals strewn around my house for the 5 millionth time, I saw this:

God Loves Little Children

Let me preface with:

Gemma is obsessed with puppies. While we have considered giving in to her endless and tearful requests for one of her own, we have decided that we can't really handle the extra everything that this entails right now. We want to wait until Gem is a little older and can share some of the doggie responsibility.

That said:

Gemma woke up from her nap yesterday in tears. She cried and told me she "needed" a black puppy. A real one. It wasn't five minutes later that our cousin Vanessa called and asked if Gemma wanted to take Gus Gus for a walk. It was a testament that God loves little children- a heaven sent answer to Gemma's sincere and heartfelt desire.

We got our pictures back from our photographer this weekend. We have been so busy this spring that I almost forgot we had these coming. It was a welcome suprise to get the final versions. I can be caught scrolling through them for the hundreth time with a perma smile on my face. Though I love each picture for different reasons, I am excited about a few little nuances that Stephanie captured for us. I love that she caught Gemma telling us, "I two!" while illustrating her new age with one finger, and playing peek-a-boo, while actually peaking through her fingers. I love her petite body, baggy leggings, clasped hands and sparkly eyes. And of course I love her spicy little personality that makes our lives exciting every single day.

Happiest Reunion

I have no words for the level of wonderful it was to feel Gemma's little arms circle my neck again. She just kept looking at Josh and I, and alternated between hugging both of us and exclaiming, "It's my mommy! It's my daddy!" Oh how I love being her mother! We have had the best time in the days following Peru being our reunited, exquisitely happy, family of three.

Machu Picchu was like stepping into another world.

We woke at 4:30 am to stand in the rain, waiting for our bus ride up. They only let the first 400 people climb Waynapicchu. I can apparently muster super-human strength when it comes to some things. We didn't want to miss the opportunity. The climb was sometimes scary, but mostly breathtaking. Each turn yielded a view more amazing than the last as we walked through the rain. The moment we reached the top, the cloud forest parted.

It was incredible.

We spent the rest of the day touring the ruins and eating the best food we had eaten since crossing boarders. It was wonderful and something I will never forget. Definitely the culmination of an unimaginable experience in Peru.

I have been missing my Gem like crazy as evidenced by the fact that everything I buy in the markets seems to be just her size. She told her grandma that she "lost her family," for the first few days, but then changed to, "My mom and dad are coming home on an airplane and bringing me presents." I wouldn't want to disappoint. Looking forward to putting these Peruvian "Ugg" slippers (complete with alpaca softness) on the Gemster in a few days. Plus I got a steal of a deal in the market- the USD equivalent of $4.00!

This ruin was about an hour hike from our hotel in Cuzco. It's pronunciation sounds like "sexy woman," with your best Mexican accent, which causes me to giggle under my breath every time someone says it.

It was beautiful and definitely one of the things I didn't know that I wanted to see, but well worth the high altitude hike. The locals say it is amazing at sunrise, which is about 5:45 am. I am not sure if I can muster the super-human strength it would take me to wake up and hike to the summit at that hour, but I believe it would be spectacular.

Letters From The Ancient City of Cuzco

We made it to Peru and are having an amazing time. The clinics have been set up for two days and we have seen thousands of patients. The height of poverty against the breathtaking backdrop of the Andes is a startling contrast and makes me so very grateful for all I have been given.

From here, we have three more clinic days, after which we will be making our way to Machu Picchu and then back home to America.

The following number among notable experiences I have had so far:

Eating Alpaca over rice. It actually wasn't bad. It was kind of like a meatball, but the thought while chewing, "I am eating alpaca, I am eating alpaca," kind of triggered my gag reflex. For the record, I draw the line at Cui (or as we like to call it in the US of A - Guinea Pig), another local staple.
Our bus driver having to take an alternate route to the village we were working in because of bus strikes, and then stopping to ask locals if the route was safe. Ten minutes later our bus was stuck in the mud on a winding trail that they called a road. We had to do a 54-point turning over an I-can-see-my-life-flash-before-my-eyes drop-off. Luckily we were all off the bus during the aforementioned turn-around process and made it down and to the village safely.
The locals showing appreciation by showering us with flower petals, bouquets, and song as we walked into their village the first day of clinic. I cried.
Assisting Kim during the extraction of seven rotted teeth, and the de-pussing of a giant cyst, with only local anesthetic and an ibuprofen prescription, followed by a very grateful nod as the man walked from the clinic.

I love being here with Josh. It is such an amazing experience and one we are so lucky to have together. He has done such a great job as Executive Director and I couldn't be more proud.

Happy 30th KC!

KC is one of Josh's best friends and just happens to be his cousin. They can talk longer about more subjects than anyone I have ever met. Their conversations are so lively and entertaining, that whoever is in the room is the audience, while they are commentators on their own show. The Como boys are quite literally the brothers Josh never had.

Tonight we celebrated KC's thirtieth birthday at Firehouse Pizza. KC's wife Mel planned a great party. Mel is so thoughtful, and put together a sweet book for KC, where we all shared memories that we have had with him over the years. We love our family and feel so lucky to be able to create these memories together. Happy 30th KC!

This time that we have lived in Logan will always be precious to us because of the relationships we have with our cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents.

Gemma loves her cousins. If she could, she would play with them all day, every day until she collapsed from exhaustion. Not hyperbole. Complete truth.

Third World Chic

If I had a bucket list, it would probably include visiting Machu Picchu.

Luck would have it that my family helps organize Idaho Condor, which is a non-profit group that takes an expedition of medical professionals and aspiring medical students down to Peru each Spring Break, to do lots and lots of service for those desperately in need. This year, (because, I am not pregnant, nursing, starting a new job, trying to graduate, etc, etc), I get the opportunity to go along!

I am beyond excited for the experience, and happy to be able to go along with Josh and help with something he has worked so hard on,

but my head is a bit swirly with preparations.

I feel like we have most of the big stuff done:

Gemma staying with Grandma and Aunties,
lists of what she likes,
her schedule,
pediatrician's information, Check
Passport, Check
Immunizations, Check
Work covered, Check

On a completely serious note: I am feeling a little anxious about leaving for ten days. This is more than twice the number of nights I have not held Gemma in my arms in her entire life. But she is in good care, and I am sure all will be fine.

So with T-minus 6 days to take off, it is pretty much down to packing.

Now, on a completely-honest-and-much-less-serious note: I have a hard time packing for a extended weekend trip in a bag that weighs less than 50 lbs, no less a carry-on that holds all necessities for a ten day, out of country trip.

I am being honest about my limitations, and have oft been reminded that "it is not a fashion show."

As if I am going to show up in Louboutin's ready to hike into a village, while the Peruvian's carry my bag (...That might just be me wishing for a pair of Louboutin's). And while I did once wear heels to a Rodeo, I am older, wiser, and possibly more practical, and happy to prove doubters that Third World Chic will be part of my repertoire.

Tonight Josh is still busy with the many things that make up our personal version of March Madness. Turns out, I am content cleaning up our house, and hanging with the Gemster. Plus I'll share a little secret. Sometimes our best date nights are during the week. There is no pressure of expectations, it makes the week shorter, and you don't have to fight the crowds.

Our last mid-week escape included a quick trip to Salt Lake, for dinner at our second favorite pizza joint. The first favorite is Grimaldi's, but the closest slice is in Vegas, and the best slice is in Brooklyn. That said, the brick oven char at Settabello doesn't disappoint. Nor does the coconut gelato ending (Pretty sure Gemma and Momma can always find room for ice cream, and its many derivatives).

Crawford Munns turned one on Friday, February 18th. We gathered and celebrated with this special little guy Saturday afternoon in South Jordan at Nick and Mel's cute house.

In true Mormon Mommy Homemaker fashion, the (from-scratch) cake was both darling and delicious.

Thankful

Logan winters are hard on momma and baby. We get cooped in our house which is nice for about a week, and then we start to get cabin fever. Saturday presented a beautifully, crisp morning and when Gemma woke up, I suggested to her that maybe we would go for a walk. She responded to the idea by going into her room and putting on her boots by herself, and then telling me she needed her coat.

We walked. Gemma rode in her stroller and took everything in for twenty minutes. Just rode, didn't wiggle and wriggle. This never happens.

And then an airplane flew over head.

And we saw the ducks.

And we found a stick.

And we got out our wiggles and wriggles.

And we were thankful for a momentary pause from winter to be able to enjoy a simple Saturday pleasure.

So this is Love, So this is what makes life divine.

I still can't believe Gemma is two. It is also hard to believe I love her more than the moment I first laid eyes on her two years ago. Cliche but true.

I waited a long time for this princess dress up session. Gemma loved animals so much the first year and a half of her life that I sometimes wondered if she would ever be interested in anything girly. Scary thought for someone as girly as me.

Josh and I gathered old VHS Disney movies from our family this year and Gemma has discovered the wonder of Cinderella, or "Cinderelly" as the mice and Gemma call her. She sings bippity-boppity-boo and loves to tell me how naughty "Rucifee" is.

...That said, she was thrilled with her head to toe Cinderella costume and princess toys.

...She might have spent the next half hour, after being outfitted telling us bippity-boo followed by the animal that she wanted us to turn into. Luckily, we had a full room of family that went along with it and acted out every animal from a pig, to a beast, to a walrus. The imagination! Guess animal knowledge comes in handy when playing princess dress-up make-believe- after all.

Oops!

Truth be told, this might be ideal "dress-up," in Gemma's world...

As previously mentioned, Sierra's farewell was the same day as Gemma's second birthday. She spoke in church and did such a wonderful job.

We all got together as a family after church to spend our last moments with our sissy before she leaves for the next 18 months. Here are pictures from the day:

We did two year old photo's of Gemma today. She is a LITTLE dramatic. We love it, but we had so many sassy faces that Aunt Whitney and I had to resort to wild schemes to get her to crack a smile. A Day for Special Girls

Today two years ago today might have been the most uncomfortable day of my life. I was claustrophobic in my own skin and I remember telling Josh that I didn't want to eat anything because I didn't think anything else could fit inside my pregnant body.

Tomorrow Gemma turns two. I have been watching her today, and marveling at how she has changed. Our lives are filled with discovery and joy as we learn about the world through her eyes. She melts my heart when she talks my ear off late into the night when we really should be sleeping, or when she group hugs Josh and I and tells us that we are a happy family. Or when she sings "Twinkle, twinkle, little star," but mostly when she walks into a room with arms raised and says, "Momma, I need to hold you," because the truth is, that I need to hold her too.

One of the most important things I learned this year is how quickly life can change and how I have to hold this little girl tighter and play with her more, and take more pictures and read more stories, because it all goes so fast anyway and you also never know what life will bring.

So in summary of my mommy reflections- the discomfort was SO worth it. I will never be more grateful for anything is this world than I am for the opportunity I have been given to be a mother.

In honor of January 30th, one of the happiest days of my life, here are some other fun facts:

My only sister Maja is eight years older than me. I have spent my whole life trying to be and do everything she did, so it comes as no suprise that eight years after she gave birth to her first baby on January 30th, I would fall in step and have my first baby on the same day!

This year Gemma turns two and my oldest neice Halle turns 10- the grandkids have entered the double digits folks! I remember the day both of them were born like it was yesterday. Halle was the first grandchild and she and I have always shared a special bond. Gemma loves Halle like a big sister and I am sure will look up to and want to be just like her! I love this picture of these beauties.

Not only do we get to celebrate birthdays on this January 30th, it is special because Sierra Lyn, or Aunt CC as we endearingly refer to her as, is having her mission farewell today. She will be entering the Provo MTC on Wednesday to commence 18 months of service to her Lord and Savior and his work here upon the earth. We are so proud of our CC and know she will be a great force for good in San Diego, California.

We love our girls on their special day and are so happy to share it with them!

Ski Weekend

We spent the weekend skiing and relaxing at a cabin in Driggs with family and friends, squeezing in a few fun memories before Sierra left on her mission! We had a great time, complete with Gemma's first sledding experience with Poppy. Needless to say- it was a hit. Thanks to Grammy for delicious lasagna and watching Gemma so Josh and I could hit the slopes.

What a weekend!

We were up and at em' early, so we could fit in everything into the Saturday we had planned. The day started with a drive to Farmington for a Fancy Nancy Birthday Party with cute cousin Abby.

I always joke that my sister is the Mormon Martha Stewart. But it isn't really a joke. She might be. It was perfect little party, complete with fancy flower-shaped finger sandwiches for lunch. With three little girls and Gemma's cousin Owen that is her same age, she is always in heaven playing with the Lusks.

Josh and I got to attend a temple session in the Salt Lake Temple with his sister Sierra, and his mom and dad. It was a wonderful session- my first at SLC.

I feel like most of the time, when we decide to go to the temple, it really hard to get there on the actual day. I don't know why it is but no matter how well we plan, it seems like we are rushing or someone is in a bad mood or I start to feel like there is something else more pressing that I should be doing.

But then we walk in the doors and take a deep breath and it all melts away. We took more family names that Grandma prepared and I had such an overwhelming confirmation from the spirit once within the walls of the temple that I was in the right place.

After the session we looked around at Trolley Square for a little while and went back to get Gem and ourselves ready for the Utah open house for Whitney and Dustin. It was a nice evening and we were so happy to get to spend time with most of our family.

Sunday: church and recovering from so much fun. Thank goodness for a day of rest. We are looking forward to an extra day off tomorrow in order to get our lives back on track before the busy week starts again.

Something New

We ended 2010 with a bang! Josh's sister and one of my very best friends Whitney Jo, got married to Dustin James Morden on December 30th, 2010.

Here is the beautiful couple. We think they are a pretty great, and are so happy for their future together, not to mention that we are excited to finally have another married couple on the Smith side!

I am excited to post the reception, but since we had a professional photographer wandering about the whole day, it was hardly motivating to snap many pictures of our own. To be continued...but in the meantime, here is a sneak peak and our first newly complete family photo!

Post Wedding Dinner Party

We had a beautiful wedding dinner at the Sandpiper in Idaho Falls the night before the wedding. The view of the temple right across the river was spectacular and it was such a wonderful evening for our families to mingle and celebrate.

After the dinner we couldn't resist the opportunity to kidnap the bride-to-be for a impromptu bachelorette party- Mormon style. We hit the local Starbucks for steamers and hot chocolate. We have such a fun group of girl cousins and loved spending Whitney's last night as a single lady with her.

Logan Friend Reunion

We had the very best married student ward experience here in Logan, and made so many friendships that will last a lifetime. Over Christmas break, we were lucky to be able to get together with just a few of our friends and catch up on life. It is crazy how fast things change. Thanks for everyone who traveled and made the effort!

The Temple

December 23rd, 2010, Whitney and Sierra both recieved their endowment in the Logan Temple. Whit and Sierra also share the same birthday, three years apart, so this was another fun day to share. We went to dinner at Hamiltons before and then spent a wonderful evening in the temple. Josh and I were priviledged to take through family names that my sweet Grandma Pluid prepared and sent to our family. It was a beautiful day and illustrated how wonderful and important the gospel is. We are so happy to be a family forever and to complete temple ordinances for more members of our family. Chyna watched Gemma for us while we were all at the temple. We can't wait for the day that we get to be in the temple with these two beauties!

Twenty-Five

Twenty-five. I woke up this morning and Josh kept asking me how I felt about being 25. At first I didn't really have an intelligent answer. I felt like it should feel momentous, but it felt pretty normal. I went to work and answered emails and got on conference calls and couldn't wait for the week to be over.

But then there was this most wonderful thing that happened. I received texts and phone calls all throughout the day wishing me a happy birthday and as I was hurriedly checking my personal emails before driving to Pocatello, I found my first birthday wish from my mom sent at 6:40 a.m.

"Dear Lyndi,
I thought of you first thing this morning...you were already born by this time of the day, and I get up at 5:30 a.m.!!! You have always been a great joy in my life. You were a smart little girl (Gemma reminds me so much of you), and you were so determined to accomplish your goals, even as a child. You asked to learn the violin, you didn't think you were really reading until you could read the books I was reading, and you wanted to create beauty, even as a child. The thing that I most appreciate about you is your spiritual depth. I think you were born with Heavenly Wisdom, and I am so thankful that you are heading towards your eternal goals with your lovely family. Have the best 25th birthday. I love you, Mom."

I cried. For some reason, that is exactly what I needed to hear. Mom's always pull through. Maybe it is because it is one of their birthday's too.

And so in response to how I feel, I am overwelmed with gratitude. I am thankful for wonderful friends and family that have let me to live within their lives; for loving me and giving me the unenumerable experiences of a beautiful life. On twenty-five years, I feel most of all- blessed.

Frosty the Snowman

The first big snow in Logan was right before Thanksgiving this year. It happened to fall on a Monday, so I went to Wal-mart, made sure Gemma was outfitted in the appropriate snow gear, and we set to work for Family Home Evening.

Daddy did the hard work and Gemma loved playing in the snow.

It was a fun way to kick off our holiday season, and must have made quite an impression as Gemma has been singing "Frosty the Snowman," all the time and will still tell me that Frosty fell down (which he did the night after he was made...fun while it lasted!).

We thought it was pretty funny that Frosty melted in such perfect form!

Gemma has been loving Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and to our delight will even do the "Hot Dog" dance. She can name all the clubhouse characters and loves to wear her special Minney Mouse ears Grandma Tueller brought back from Disneyland.

Meanwhile, her mommy and daddy are secretly planning the perfect time to take her on a Disneyland adventure of her own.

Utah Shower

We set off our wedding celebrations for Whitney on November 5th, 2010. The shower was held at Dustin's sister's house in Herriman. We had so much fun and I was lucky to have my sisters go to the shower with me! We had such a fun girls night out.

Halloween 2010

This year Gemma was a peacock for Halloween. We had a fun time dressing up for our "Mommy and Me" dance class party. We did a Halloween dance to this cute song called, "I wish I could be a Ghost." We colored, marched, and trunk-or-treated and managed to go tantrum free until the end, when it was time for a group picture.

The costume was a find of my fantastic mother-in-law. I can always count on the dance teachers in the family to pull through with costumes!

She is lucky to be able to dance with her cute little cousins Portia and Ellis and take lessons from Aunt Tina and Kila!

There are a few things that I found very interesting about the dress up process this Halloween. Despite the fact that we have been bathing, lotioning, doing hair, getting dressed, etc. every day for almost two years now, Gemma kind of hates the process. She is happiest when she is half naked and running about of her own free will. The two worst things that you can do to the child are tell her "No," or pin her down.

Needless to say, the first time we tried the costume on was a major battle.

But maybe not so surprisingly, the child is also a performer, which trumps her distaste for confining frufru. She thought that she was pretty great, as evidenced by the love affair with her own reflection. I think she is pretty cute too, as evidenced by my love affair with her!

We spent the actual Halloween weekend in St. George, watching Josh's sister Chyna dance in the Odyssey Dance Theater production of "Thriller," at Tuacahn. I would recommend seeing it there! We went to the production earlier in October at another performance hall, and our favorite was definitely the fun and spooky outdoor amphitheater experience in St. George.

Josh's Grandpa Tueller's birthday is also on Halloween, so we were lucky to come home to a fun family party in Logan!

Whitney and Dustin Engaged

Dustin and Whitney got engaged on September 16th, 2010. Dustin proposed at Disneyland and making it once again the most magical place on earth. A picture is worth a thousand words. So without further ado:
